Today, I want to share a personal story – my own journey of discovering a fulfilling side hustle that eventually became my passion and purpose.

For years, I built a successful career in nonprofit operations. I loved the challenges and the sense of contribution, but there was always a part of me that yearned for something more. I had a passion for teaching, for helping others grow and achieve their goals. At first, I didn’t see how these two worlds could intersect.

Then, one day, it hit me:

“You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to do something completely different than anything you’ve ever done before.”

This realization changed everything. Here’s how my journey unfolded:

1. Recognizing My Strengths: I realized that my operational skills – organizing, planning, and problem-solving – were actually invaluable teaching tools.
2. Shifting Perspectives: Instead of seeing mentoring as separate from my job, I began to view it as an extension of my role in operations.
3. Blending Passion with Profession: I started actively mentoring and coaching my direct reports, applying my teaching passion within my existing role.
4. Starting Small: I began conducting workshops, sharing my operational expertise while honing my teaching skills.
5. Learning and Growing: Each mentoring session and workshop taught me more about effective coaching, allowing me to refine my approach.

The turning point came when I had the opportunity to mentor and coach doctoral dissertation students at a leading university. This side hustle allowed me to fully embrace my passion for teaching while leveraging the skills I’d developed throughout my nonprofit career.

I didn’t have to choose between my established career and my passion. Instead, I found a way to blend them, creating a fulfilling side hustle that eventually led me to where I am today – an accountability life coach helping professionals like you find their own purposeful pathways.

My journey taught me that our side hustles don’t need to be complete departures from our current paths. Often, they’re about finding new applications for our existing skills and passions.
